In our final radio show of the football season, we review, debate and discuss the state championship games from 1A to 5A. Congrats to all the teams that won titles!
The Dufur Rangers won their seventh state championship with a hard fought 36-32 win over Crane. What a great story Dufur has been this season with multiple come from behind wins! Marvin and I review the game and stats.
The Heppner Mustangs were a team on a mission this season following their loss to Burns in the 2014 state championship game. The Mustangs run the table, finish 13-0 with a 48-0 win over Kennedy and secure their second state championship. Marvin and I review the stats and discuss the championship game against Kennedy.
Another great high school football story is the 2015 Vale Vikings. The Vikings lost a whole bunch of players from their 2014 state championship team and their head coach, yet they reload and defeat Santiam Christian 27-20 to secure their state leading 12th state championship. Marvin and I analyze and discuss this game and speculate that Vale may continue their run, as they appear to be loaded with underclassmen making significant contributions.
Cascade won their second state championship with a 37-28 win over Scappoose. This was one of two state title games that were rematches of regular season games. Coach Steve Turner won a 5A title in 2011 at Mountain View and now has two rings at two different classifications. He was also an assistant on a North Medford team that won a title, so yeah, he’s a good coach and likes jewelry.
Summit wins their first ever state championship in football with a 45-28 win over Ashland. This game was also a rematch of a week #2 game won by Ashland 14-13. Hard to believe the Storm were just 0-9 just five years ago and lost to North Eugene in the infamous “offer Play-In game” in which both teams entered the Play-In game winless. Marvin and I review this game and look to the future for the Storm as they return many players next year. The Storm also win 5 of the 6 Fall State Championships at the 5A Classification (football, volleyball, girls soccer, boys cross country and girls cross country).
We also review the two 6A semi-final games and preview the 6A championship game between West Linn and Jesuit. West Linn Coach Chris Miller is our guest interview this week. Marvin pulls no punches during the interview asking if Coach Miller was hoping to play his alma mater in the title game and if the Sheldon job were to come open, would he be a candidate? Marvin loves hypotheticals. We also discuss the keys to the game versus Jesuit, the plan to contain Crusader running back Jason Talley and if West Lion quarterback Tim Tawa is the best high school quarterback he has coached.
It’s all right here. ENJOY!
