It’s Championship week for 1A to 5A schools! Three local teams will be playing for a State Championship this saturday. You can catch all the games at Hillsboro Stadium. Monroe/Triangle Lake (2A) will take on Santiam High School at 11:00 AM, Cottage Grove (4A) will battle the Marshfield Pirates at 2:30 PM and Churchill (5A) will take on the Hermiston Bulldogs at 6:00 PM.
This week on our podcast Talkin’ Football we have Hermiston Coach David Faaeteete. Coach Faaeteete attended North Medford High School and was coached by former Hermiston Coach Mark Hodges. He then played defensive end for the Oregon Ducks. Coach Faaeteete reviews the season for his Hermiston team, tells us about his staff and some of the senior leaders on his Bulldog team this year. He also reviews the 35-27 semi-final win over Wilsonville and previews the title game against the Churchill Lancers. At the start of week #4, the Bulldogs were 1-2 and facing a tough road game at Summit. We here from Coach Faaeteete about that game, how the season turned around and much more in our interview.
We also review Monroe’s 47-42 win over Knappa and Cottage Grove’s 54-35 win over Mazama.
None of these three teams has won an outright state championship in football. Churchill shared the 1977 title with Medford when they played to a 7-7 tie.
Cottage Grove has never won a state championship in football, although they were runner up in 2013 (lost 50-31 to Ridgeview) and in 2016 (lost 35-21 to North Bend).
Monroe has two co-championships. In 1954, they played to a 0-0 tie with Union. In 1956, they played to a 7-7 tie with Stanfield. I have a feeling they will be scoring more points in the championship game this year!
