Congrats to both Monroe (2A) and Cottage Grove (4A) for winning a football State Championship on saturday.
Monroe finished the season 11-1 and defeated the Santiam Wolverines 36-22 to secure their first outright state championship. The Dragons tied Union 0-0 in 1954 and Stanfield 7-7 in 1956 to share the title. They never trailed in the game, had one turnover and punted one time while rushing for 250 yards and converting 7 of 12 third down plays. The offensive line did a great job. We review this game in our final podcast of the year.
Cottage Grove also won a state championship at 4A with a 48-14 win over Marshfield. This was Cottage Grove’s third title appearance in five years. There was talk in the Registed-Guard comparing the Lions to the NFL’s Buffalo Bills who lost four Super Bowls in the 1990’s. Well, they weren’t the Buffalo Bills but maybe they can now celebrate at Buffalo Wild Wings with their first ever state championship. We review this game and have a chance to talk with Cottage Grove Coach Gary Roberts and seniors Cooper Ladd, Danny Dunn and Nate Farrell. The Lions played a nearly perfect game with only one penalty, no turnovers and two punts. They limited explosion plays and put up 343 yards of total offense. We ask at what moment the players felt they had the game won and what game was the most physical in the 2017 season.
We ran across a nice highlight video on Youtube of the Lions big win:
At the 5A level the Churchill Lancers came up just short of completing a perfect season in a 38-35 loss to the Hermiston Bulldogs. We review this game, including some key moments in the fourth quarter. The Lancers were hurt by three turnovers and unfortunately did not play their best game of the season.
